The development of Forest Farm began in 1968 with the purpose of creating a residential and training centre for cerebral palsied adults. During the next 10years a bare piece of ground was developed into residential cottages, workshop, hall, kitchen and staff accommodation. Forest Farm Centre was officially opened in April, 1977.
The need to establish an additional facility for severely handicapped cerebral palsied adults was then recognised and in March 1994 the newly completed Forest Haven, including an activities centre, was officially opened.
The present Forest Farm complex is home to a total of 102 residents, and plans are underway to expand the centre to accommodate up to 150 people.
Adults with cerebral palsy of 18 years or older from all cultural, ethnic and religious groups may be our social worker at the time of application for admission.
Residents with a less severe degree of cerebral palsy are accommodated at Forest Farm, while those requiring maximum care are provided for at Forest Haven.
Residents with varying degrees of independence live in cottages at Forest Farm where they share bedrooms and are encouraged to take pride in their surroundings. Families are encouraged to maintain contact with their dependent residents and to include them in family events. Fun days, holiday programmes, religious outings, shopping and other activities are organised for all residents. The residents also belong to the Norscot Manor Library. Transportation is provided to relevant hospitals and clinics where necessary.
The Haven provides 24-hour care for profoundly disabled residents who require assistance with all aspects of daily living. Residents are encouraged to participate in daily stimulation and therapeutic activities including art and music therapy, physiotherapy and craft work.
Residents who enjoy the stimulation of manual work attend the workshop on a daily basis. Contracts are obtained from private companies to provide various services including:
Quotations for other suitable work are provided on request.
Our successful bookshop is open to the public on the last weekend of every month and incorporates a small tea garden. All donations of used books are welcome.
Our Management Committee & Staff (Back to top)
Forest Farm Centre employs a number of lightly skilled and professional staff including a centre manager, social worker, workshop manager, house mothers, nurse and receptionist. This team is responsible to a committee made up of experienced volunteers. Daily care-giving, catering and cleaning are outsourced to a private company.
We provide individual stimulation activities including painting, other art work as well as music therapy.
The management committee, whose members all serve on a voluntary basis, are committed to the following:
To provide total care and accommodation
for adults(18 years and older) who are afflicted with cerebral palsy in any of
its forms.
To facilitate the maximum development of
residents, according to their abilities.
To prevent harm or loss to residents, staff, contractors and visitors by installing, implementing and maintaining, within our means, such equipment and procedures that minimise risk.

Bona Lesedi Disability Organisation is a centre for the intellectually challenged, physically handicapped, people with head and spinal injuries and a pediatric section for children with speech impairments and learning difficulties.
As some of our objectives we establish, administer and carry on social, recreational and educational work to the benefit of our people.
The centre has 98 physically and mentally people on its files in 2004. On any given day, there are about 41 people [90% are children]. Two meals are provided everyday for people attending the project. The main source of food is the kitchen vegetable garden. The project runs on a wing and a prayer – and the enthusiasm and dedication of its staff.
To service our Cerebral Palsy with care and dignity, Lesedi CP Day Care was established in June 2003.
